The Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories (DFSL), State of Maharashtra, headquartered at Santacruz, Mumbai, is a premier multi-disciplinary organization. In addition to the headquarters, there are seven Regional Forensic Science Laboratories located at Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik, Amravati, Nanded, and Kolhapur. These laboratories are equipped with the necessary facilities for examination and analysis of forensic samples.
Considering the geographical spread of Maharashtra and the growing needs of investigation agencies, the State Government has also established Five Mini Forensic Science Laboratories at Chandrapur, Solapur, Ratnagiri, Dhule, and Thane. These mini labs presently provide services in Biology and Toxicology divisions, with plans to expand other branches in the near future.
As per BNS & BNSS 2023, a landmark initiative of the Government of Maharashtra is the Mobile Forensic Van Project, under which 259 Mobile Forensic Vans have been sanctioned for every SDPO and DCP Zone, including 8 advanced vans equipped with specialized technologies. These state-of-the-art vans provide crucial support to investigation agencies by enabling rapid, scientific, and reliable collection, preservation, and forwarding of evidence from crime scenes. This project ensures that forensic expertise is available at the doorstep of every police unit, enhancing efficiency and scientific rigor in crime scene management.
In addition, DFSL has taken three flagship projects that represent the future of forensic science in Maharashtra:
1. Computerization for Automation & Digitization – Enabling e-governance by integrating all laboratories under a unified digital platform for efficient case tracking, exhibit management, and transparent reporting.
2. Centre of Excellence in Digital Forensics – Establishing advanced forensic capabilities, research, and training to tackle cybercrime and emerging digital threats.
3. Semi-Automated Pendency Removal Project for Cyber Cases – Deploying advanced technologies to rapidly reduce backlog in cyber forensic analysis.
It is an honour and privilege to serve as the Director General (Legal & Technical) of the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories, State of Maharashtra. The officers and staff of the Directorate have always embraced the latest technologies and advanced instrumentation, ensuring that DFSL keeps pace with global forensic standards. Their dedication and commitment to excellence continue to strengthen the administration of justice in our state.
